The Olympian Gods between Macedon and Thessaly of eastern Greece there stood a high mountain. its cloudy top rushed into the very heavens.on the top of the mountain ， the home of the gods was bathed in brightness.
All the chief gods mentioned above took human forms of incomparable beauty and grace， often moved by human feelings and desires，they frequently gave way to anger and jealousy.they became involved in ceaseless battles with the world of man. among themselves at olympus they plotted and struggled for power.in the human world they experienced competitions and difficulties.they enjoyed earthly friendships and loves.acrowd of everlasting gods looked and acted in a perfectly human fashion that is what all gods at olympus actually were.
Hylas and the Nymphs
Zeus (Jupiter)The king of the gods， the ruler of Mount Olympus and the god of the sky， weather， thunder， law， order and fate. He is the youngest son of Cronus and Rhea， whom he overthrew， and brother-husband to Hera. In artwork， he was depicted as a regal（庄严的）， mature（稳重的） man with a sturdy（健壮的） figure and dark beard. His usual attributes are the royal sceptre（王位） and the lightning bolt， and his sacred animal is the eagle.
Hera(Juno)， A proud and green-eyed （嫉妒的）woman. Queen of marriage， women， childbirth， heirs， kings and empires. She is daughter of Cronus and Rhea，Zeus’s sister.She was usually depicted as a beautiful woman wearing a crown and veil (面纱)and holding a royal， lotus-tipped staff（权杖）. Her sacred animals are the heifer（小母牛）， the lion， the peacock（孔雀） and the cuckoo（杜鹃）.
Poseidon (Neptune)was ruler of the sea. rivers， floods， droughts， earthquakes and horses; known as the “Earth Shaker” or “Storm Bringer”. He is a brother to Zeus andHades. In classical artwork he was depicted as a mature man of sturdy build with a dark beard， and holding a trident.（三叉戟）
Apollo (Apollo)was the god of the sun ，music and poetry. He was the son of zeus and let leto was driven by hera from land to land at last Poseidon took pity onher and brought the island of delos out of water for her to live on.thereshe gave birth to the twins ，apollo and artemis.
Artemis(Diana) ，Apollo’s twin sister， she was the goddess of the moon and the chase. apollo drove his golden carriage(马车) across the heavens during the day ，admired as the sun-god.artemis also raced across the sky in solemn style at night ，“the queen of wide air ” gave off silver light all over the sleeping world below. she remained single all her life，just as apollo represents manly beauty ，so Artemis stands for feminine purity and virginity。
Athena(Minerva) was the goddess of wisdom， warfare， strategy. The daughter of Zeus and Metis， she was born from Zeus‘s head fully-formed and armoured.(全副武装) She was depicted crowned with a crested helmet(头盔) armed with shield（盾）and spear（矛）， and wearing the snake-trimmed aegis cloak（披风） adorned with the head of the Gorgon. Her symbols include the aegis and the olive tree(橄榄树). She is commonly shown accompanied by her sacred animal， the owl（猫头鹰）.
Ares (Mars)was the god of war，son of zeus and hera ，God of war， bloodlust， violence， manly courage， and civil order. The son of Zeus andHera， he was depicted as either a mature， bearded warrior dressed in battle arms， or a nude beardless youth with helm and spear. .on the other hand he signified courage and victory in battle ，and was devoutly worshipped by soldiers going to war.

Aphrodite (Venus)was the goddess of love and beauty， Zeus's daughter. Although married to Hephaestus she had many lovers， most notably Ares. She was depicted as a beautiful woman usually accompanied by her son Eros. Her symbols include rose， scallop shell and myrtle wreath.

Hephaestus(Vulcan)赫斯费托斯was the god of fire， metalworking， stonemasonry and sculpture. The son of Hera and Zeus， he is the smith of the gods and the husband of Aphrodite. He was usually depicted as a bearded lame(瘸的) man holding hammer and tongs(钳子)—the tools of a smith—and riding a donkey. His symbols are the hammer and tongs. His sacred animals are the donkey， and the crane.
Hermes(Mercury) the son of Zeus and Maia the God of travel， messengers， trade， thievery， cunning wiles， athletics， and animal husbandry. He is the messenger of the gods， a psychopomp who leads the souls of the dead into Hades’s realm， the gods equipped him with a pair of winged sandals(飞鞋) and winged cap（飞帽） to enable him to travel swifter（快捷） than sight. Hermes was also a patron（守护神） of travellers.
Greek heroes were almost as important as the gods in Greek mythology.Heroes were bigger ，braver，and more beautiful than ordinary men and women .In most cases their fathers or grandfathers were gods，but their mothers were mortals，so they were often called demigods(half-gods).
